Weight loss surgery. Yikes! You’ve surely heard of it and if you are really in a bind to lose weight this is an option though you may think of it as a last option. Though this type of surgery has helped many improve their health both mentally and physically the question for yourself may be: “Is weight loss surgery for you?”
Determining whether weight loss surgery is right for you will depend on several factors. One is of course your weight (DUH). It is kind of a duh statement however many folks don’t realize that most of the time a surgeon that specializes in weight loss won’t perform the surgery on someone unless they are at least 80 pounds overweight. So if you are “unfortunate” enough not to be at least 80 pounds overweight then you may not qualify for the surgery anyway. Don’t fret though because there are other approaches you can take to lose that weight.
Alternatives to weight loss surgery
I remember asking my father when he was around the simple question: ‘How do I lose weight?” His answer was just as simple: “Don’t eat.” Ahhhh how easy! So if I had just starved myself back then I would be the width of a matchstick now. Well maybe it isn’t that easy but there certainly is proof to the fact that eating less leads to weight loss. My father should have known since he was a prisoner of war during WWII and came out a little thinner then he went in. But we are not talking about POW starvation here to avoid surgery.
Alternative methods to surgery do come mainly in lifestyle changing facets. Eating healthy and exercise are the basics to losing weight. You know the old equation: “The less you put in the less you put on.” At least it seems to make sense that it would work that way. That along with moving around more should have you burning calories and losing weight.
And then there are the weight loss products. Diet pills and potions are running rampant nowadays. The Weight Watchers and Jenny Craigs are out there and if you look at the success stories of some of the people who have undertaken the programs you do see some success with them. The main point here though is that there are alternatives to this type of surgery and possibly spending large amounts of money to undergo it.
Of course there are the situations where weight loss surgery is necessary. If your doctor tells you that your health is at the point where you need to lose weight and alot of it NOW surgery may become unavoidable. You can lose weight with diet and exercise but some individual situations can’t wait that long. Surgery of this type can literally be lifesaving for some people. Always consult with your doctor and get second and third opinions if you feel you should. Any surgery should be done with as much information on hand as you can get but yes there are situations that can make surgery unavoidable.
Popular types of weight loss surgery
If you decide that surgery to lose weight is right for you, 2 of the most popular surgeries performed are gastric bypass surgery and lap-band surgery. Gastric Bypass surgery is one of them and it involves one having their stomach stapled while lap-band surgery involves one having an adjustable or removable band. I have not had either performed on myself nor do I know of anyone that has but just by hearing that the gastric bypass surgery consists of one having their stomach stapled tells me that you should definitely make sure you have all the information in front of yourself along with your doctor before making such a decision.
Weight loss surgery isn’t a process to jump into blindly but with the right information and guidance you can find out whether such a procedure should be undertaken. If you do make the decision to undergo such surgery hopefully you will find or regain the health you once had or maybe have never had and have always desired.
